Radiation protection

Handling permits are issued and monitored by the responsible licensing and supervisory authority (Arnsberg district government).
The Chancellor of Dortmund University of Technology is responsible for radiation protection in accordance with the Radiation Protection Act.
He also ensures that there are sufficient competent radiation protection officers for the management or supervision of activities at the individual handling locations.
The general radiation protection instructions of TU Dortmund University (german) apply.
Radiation protection officer
The radiation protection officers in the individual facilities carry out the organizational and administrative tasks on site in the radiation protection area. Radiation protection officers require training in accordance with the Radiation Protection Ordinance with regard to the handling of radioactive substances or the operation of radiation equipment (e.g. X-ray systems).
Information on the appointment of radiation protection officers and the necessary co-determination procedures can be obtained from the Occupational, Environmental and Health Protection Department. This is where the radiation protection officers are appointed and supported in the performance of their duties.
Furthermore, all correspondence and handling permits as well as notifications must be submitted to the licensing and supervisory authorities via the Office of Occupational Safety, Environmental and Health Protection.
Security checks
As a rule, the safety of X-ray equipment must be inspected by experts every 5 years. The Office of Occupational Safety, Environmental and Health Protection supports the facilities in fulfilling these obligations via a framework agreement. Appointments can be arranged via the Office of Occupational Safety, Environmental and Health Protection.
For activities of TU members in external radiation protection areas within the Federal Republic of Germany (e.g. DESY, BESSY, FRM II..), the Office of Occupational Safety, Environmental and Health Protection maintains a central permit for the entire TU in accordance with §25 of the Radiation Protection Act. Through demarcation agreements with most of the large and well-known research facilities, research stays at these facilities are also formally enabled and radiation passports are maintained.
