Screening of persons occupationally exposed to radiation

At TU Dortmund University, a distinction is made between mandatory precautions in accordance with the Radiation Protection Ordinance and optional precautions.

Note for the special case of stays abroad:

Examinations that are usually required by facilities abroad (CERN, ILL ...) for access authorization are always optional examinations. The necessary documents/examination certificates can be issued by the company medical service as part of this examination. TU Dortmund University does not have the legal basis for mandatory examinations here, as the scope of the Radiation Protection Ordinance is limited exclusively to the Federal Republic of Germany. The examination and the scope of the examination can therefore not be ordered by the employer.

Compulsory precautions

According to §77 StrlSchV, occupationally exposed persons of category A (>6mSv effective annual dose) or, by order of the supervisory authority, persons of category B (>1mSv/year <6mSv/year) must be examined before starting work and before the end of one year after the last assessment.

This examination is usually carried out for employees of the Technical University of Dortmund by doctors from the company medical service. Examination appointments for new employees and repeat examinations are arranged via the office in Department 7 at arbeitsmedizinische-vorsorge@tu-dortmund.de.

In order to be able to carry out the preventive medical check-up in accordance with the relevant directive under StrlSchV, the authorized doctor must be provided with information on working conditions and the type of radiation exposure.

In order to fulfill this obligation, the following form must be completed by the responsible radiation protection officer before the examination and given to the employee to be examined at the time of the examination.

Optional screening

In addition to the mandatory screening, all employees of TU Dortmund University who are occupationally exposed to radiation have the opportunity to register for an optional screening via Office of Occupational Safety, Environmental and Health Protection (Ms. Schmidt). Reasons for an optional screening can be certificates for external facilities, inexplicably increased exposure values in personal dosimetry, suspicion of increased exposure due to an incident, the need for a consultation, for example due to previous illnesses or similar topics.

The scope of the examination is agreed between the company doctor and the employee during the examination. The employee is informed verbally of the results of the examination. Office of Occupational Safety, Environmental and Health Protection receives feedback on participation in the examination, but explicitly not on the result.

In order to be able to carry out this optional examination in accordance with the StrlSchV guidelines, the doctor requires information on working conditions and the type of radiation exposure.

The following form can be completed by the employee and must be brought to the examination.
