Toner dusts

Laser printers (and photocopiers) have long been suspected of posing a health risk. However, various studies have not yet been able to clarify this.

What to do?

Laser printers and photocopiers (multifunction devices) are best kept in well-ventilated, separate rooms. Toner should not get on the skin or be inhaled. If toner gets on your skin or clothing, cold water will help.

Spilled toner can be wiped up with a damp cloth. In the event of a paper jam, it is advisable not to tear the paper out of the printer by force. Otherwise, unfixed toner dust can be released and endanger the respiratory tract, skin and eyes.

Almost all printer drivers offer the option "Save toner". If this is selected as the default setting, the toner cartridge needs to be replaced less frequently. Laser printers should be serviced regularly by qualified personnel. Most toner cartridges can be returned to the manufacturer for recycling. Refilled cartridges should comply with the new DIN standard 33870, which specifies quality and safety requirements for cartridges and toner.

Office furniture

Information on the procurement of office furniture via the framework agreement partners can be found in the service portal.

In cooperation with the Procurement Office and the framework agreement partner of TU Dortmund University, the Office of Occupational Safety, Environmental an Health Protection will also be happy to provide you with further advice. During an on-site appointment, helpful information on health protection can be provided as part of an ergonomics consultation and possible sources of danger can be minimized or excluded in advance of new furnishings.

We would be happy to advise you and look forward to your call.

Mobile work/ situational work/ alternating home-based teleworking

You can find all information on the possible forms of work in the service portal.

Participation in the regular mobile working model requires mandatory instruction on occupational health and safety. Participants are jointly responsible for the principles of work ergonomics, occupational health and safety law and safety technology during mobile working. The linked video provides you with electronically supported instruction. Supervisors must document participation (e.g. in a simple list, as with the annual basic instruction) by the participants in the mobile working model at the start of the activity and then at least once a year, preferably as part of the basic instruction.

As the video (service portal) only provides general instructions, supervisors must be available to answer specific questions and, if necessary, in person. The occupational safety specialists, here Claus Poppe, Tel. 755-4213 and the company medical service will be happy to advise you if you require further information.
